Highlights
- Ancient Taoist temples
- Beautiful hiking trails
- Lush forests and waterfalls
- Cable car to summit
- Peaceful atmosphere
The Honest Truth
What guidebooks will not tell you - the real deal from someone who lives here
- Rear Mountain is more beautiful but less developed - fewer facilities
- Front Mountain temples are interesting but some are recently rebuilt, not ancient
- The 'peaceful' reputation is ruined by crowds on weekends and holidays
- Weather changes quickly - bring layers even on sunny days
- The hike to the top is steep - do not underestimate it if you are not fit
What to Actually Expect
- Beautiful mountain scenery with misty forests
- A mix of genuine ancient sites and modern reconstructions
- Lots of stairs - this is a mountain temple complex, not a casual walk
- Tea houses along the trail where you can rest
What to Avoid
- Do not attempt the full hike if you are not in reasonable shape
- Do not visit on weekends - it becomes a conveyor belt of tourists
- Do not trust the 'ancient' label on everything - many temples were rebuilt
- Do not forget rain protection - mountain weather is unpredictable
Practical Tips
- Front Mountain for culture, Rear for nature
- Take cable car to save energy
- Wear good hiking shoes
- Bring rain gear
- Combine with Dujiangyan Irrigation
