Getting Around Chengdu
Chengdu transport is not hard, but the smartest choice changes by time of day, luggage, weather, and energy. This page is about the smooth option, not only the cheapest option.
Transport Options
By Air
Check whether you land at Tianfu or Shuangliu. Tianfu is farther out, so your first transfer decision matters more than people expect.
- Tianfu is much farther from the center than Shuangliu
- Metro works well if you arrive at a reasonable hour and already have payment set up
- A DiDi or official taxi is often the smoother move after a long international flight
- Late arrivals should optimize ease, not the absolute cheapest transfer
By Train
Chengdu has two main railway stations. Chengdu East Railway Station is the primary hub for high-speed trains to major cities.
- Chengdu East: Main high-speed rail hub
- Chengdu South: Regional trains
- Connected by Metro Lines 2 and 7
- High-speed rail to Chongqing (1.5 hours)
Bus
Buses reach a lot of the city, but they are usually not the first tool I would recommend to short-stay foreign visitors.
- Useful when you already know the route or have local help
- Cheap and extensive, but less intuitive than metro plus DiDi
- Better for longer stays than for first-day city navigation
- Crowding and language friction make buses a lower-priority tool for most visitors
Taxi & Rideshare
For many foreign visitors, DiDi is the most valuable convenience tool in Chengdu once the day gets tired, wet, or late.
- DiDi is usually easier than hailing random street taxis
- Most drivers do not speak English, so saved Chinese addresses still matter
- Use cars strategically for late nights, airport transfers, and weather-heavy days
- Metro is cheaper, but DiDi often wins on comfort at the right moments
Key Metro Lines for Tourists
These are the lines most visitors end up using. You do not need to memorize the whole network to move around well.

Tianfu Tong Card
The Tianfu Tong Card still exists, but it is no longer the only smart answer. For many foreign visitors, it is simpler to use Alipay first and treat the physical card as optional.
Where to Buy
Metro station counters and some convenience stores. Useful if you prefer a physical fallback.
Cost
Fine as a backup tool, but not necessary for most short foreign trips.
Top Up
Good if you want a physical card, but Alipay usually gives you a cleaner overall setup.
Alternative: Mobile Payment
If you do not want a physical card, these are the payment options that matter most:
- Alipay: Still the best first setup for most foreign visitors because it helps beyond transport too.
- WeChat Pay: Common locally, but usually not the first tool I would rely on as a foreign visitor.
- Apple Pay: Useful in some cases, but not a complete replacement for Alipay.
Essential Transport Tips
Start with Alipay, not a transport card
A physical transport card is optional. For most foreign visitors, Alipay is the first thing to get working because it helps with metro, DiDi, and small everyday payments.
Keep metro for the easy parts of the day
The metro is excellent when you are fresh, moving between big hubs, or avoiding traffic. It becomes less attractive when you are jet-lagged, carrying luggage, or traveling late.
Avoid Rush Hours
Metro remains useful in rush hour, but it feels much less friendly with luggage, children, parents, or after a full sightseeing day.
Have Addresses in Chinese
Most drivers do not speak English. Keep your hotel and main destinations saved in Chinese characters and as map pins.
Airport to City Center
Metro Line 18 is a good airport option when you arrive at a sensible hour and feel ready to navigate. After a long flight, though, a DiDi or official taxi is often the smarter first move.
