Chengdu has two airports, and they are on opposite sides of the city. Booking the wrong one can add more than an hour to your arrival day.

Compare Chengdu's two airports, Tianfu and Shuangliu, with transfer times, metro options, international flights, and practical advice for choosing the right one.

The key difference

Tianfu International Airport (TFU) is the newer, larger airport southeast of the city and handles most international flights. Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is closer to the city center on the southwest side and still handles many domestic and some regional flights. Which one you use depends on your airline and route, so check the airport code on every ticket rather than assuming.

Getting to and from Tianfu

Tianfu is roughly 50 kilometers from the center. Metro Line 18 runs from Chengdu South Railway Station to the airport in about 40 to 60 minutes. A taxi or DiDi can take longer in traffic and is significantly more expensive. The airport is large, so allow extra time for walking between security and gates. If you have an early flight, consider staying closer to the airport or leaving plenty of margin.

Getting to and from Shuangliu

Shuangliu is closer, roughly 16 kilometers from the center, and Metro Line 10 connects it to the city. Taxis are quicker and cheaper than from Tianfu. It is a good option if you are staying in the southwest or need a short transfer. Do not assume Shuangliu is always the more convenient airport; traffic and your hotel location matter.

Transferring between airports

A direct transfer between the two airports takes around 1.5 hours or more by car, and longer by metro with transfers. Do not schedule a tight connection between them. If you must switch airports on the same day, allow at least three hours between arrival and departure, and check whether a direct airport shuttle is running. Bookings change, so verify the current option before relying on it.

Which should you choose?

If you have a choice, pick the airport closest to your hotel and with a flight time that fits your day. For international arrivals, Tianfu is the most likely option. For a short domestic hop, Shuangliu may be easier. Always check the airport code in the booking confirmation, and confirm the terminal as well; both airports have multiple terminals or large single terminals with long walks.
