What should I avoid in Chengdu?

Here's what to avoid in Chengdu for a smooth trip:

Common Tourist Scams to Avoid:
- Unsolicited "invitation for tea": Strangers (usually young people) approaching you saying "want to practice English" then inviting you to a tea house where they charge you $100+. Just politely decline and walk away. This scam exists in many Chinese tourist cities.
- Black market money changers near attractions offering "better rates" - it's illegal and often fake money. Only exchange at banks, airport, or your hotel.
- "Free massage" or "cheap art" scams - same idea, you end up with a huge bill.

Practical Things to Avoid:
- Arriving at Panda Base after 10:00 AM - pandas will be asleep already
- Eating extremely spicy food if you're not used to it - start with mild and work your way up
- Traveling during Golden Week (Oct 1-7) - everything is extremely crowded, book everything way in advance
- Taking unlicensed taxis - use DiDi app or official taxis from the stand

Cultural Things to Know:
- Don't stick chopsticks vertically in your rice - it resembles funeral incense
- Don't tip - tipping isn't expected anywhere in China
- Don't be afraid to ask for directions - people are generally helpful and friendly

The biggest mistake tourists make:
Over-scheduling their trip. Chengdu is supposed to be relaxed - don't try to cram 10 attractions into one day. Slow down, enjoy tea, enjoy food, and embrace the laid-back vibe. That's the Chengdu way!
