A practical guide to deciding how many days to spend in Chengdu, with advice for 2, 3, 4, and 5 day trips depending on your pace and travel style.
If you only have 2 days
Two days is enough for a panda morning and one classic city day, but it will feel selective. I would only use a 2 day Chengdu plan if the city is one stop inside a larger China or Sichuan trip. You can get a taste of Chengdu, but not the full rhythm of it.
Why 3 days is the best short-trip answer
Three days is the best answer for many first-time visitors. It gives you enough space for pandas, city classics, and one slower local-life layer. It still feels efficient, but it stops the trip from turning into pure transfer time and attraction sequencing.
When 4 to 5 days makes more sense
Four or five days is better if you care about food, neighborhood time, travel with parents or children, or want weather flexibility. Chengdu improves when you leave room for tea, long meals, and a less compressed pace. This is especially true if you want the city to feel memorable rather than merely completed.
The simplest rule
If Chengdu is a main destination, choose 3 to 5 days. If it is a brief city stop, choose 2 to 3. The more you value comfort, food, and flexibility, the more useful the extra days become.
