Accommodation
Where is the best area to stay in Chengdu for tourists?
If you want the safest default, stay around Tianfu Square or Chunxi Road.
That area is not the most romantic or the most local, but it solves the most first-trip problems at once: metro access, easy food, predictable hotel supply, and less hassle getting back at night.
Why this area works so well:
- strong metro connections for moving across the city
- easy food and coffee within walking distance
- simpler airport arrival and late-night returns
- a wide range of hotel standards, which matters if you want less check-in friction
When I would choose something else:
- Wuhou / south-central areas if you want a calmer base with easier evening food and less retail intensity
- Kuanzhai / western central pockets if atmosphere matters more than pure convenience
- Tongzilin or nearby south-city neighborhoods if meals and a slightly more lived-in urban feel matter more than landmark proximity
The main rule:
Do not choose a remote luxury stay or an airport-side hotel for a short first trip just because the room looks better online. In Chengdu, location usually improves the trip more than one extra level of hotel polish.
If you still feel unsure:
Pick the hotel area that makes arrival night, breakfast, and the ride home easiest. That logic usually leads first-time visitors back to Tianfu Square or Chunxi Road.
