Can I drink tap water in Chengdu?
No, you shouldn't drink tap water directly in Chengdu, just like most places in China.
What you should do:
- Drink bottled water - it's very cheap (2-5 RMB per bottle)
- Most hotels provide bottled water for free
- You can boil tap water if you prefer
- Use bottled water for brushing teeth too, or just spit it out - it's fine
Where to buy:
- Any convenience store, supermarket, or street vendor
- Very cheap, easy to find everywhere
- Large bottles are cheaper per liter
Tips:
- Bring a reusable water bottle and fill it from boiled water at your hotel
- Or buy bottled water - it's very affordable
- Ice in restaurants is usually made from boiled water, so it's safe
This is standard throughout China, not just Chengdu. Just stick to bottled water and you'll be fine.
