Do people speak English in Chengdu?

English is not widely spoken in Chengdu, but that matters less than most first-time visitors expect.

Where English is most likely:
- hotel front desks in mid-range and higher-end properties
- airport staff, some metro staff, and major attraction counters
- newer cafes, international chains, and some polished restaurants
- younger workers who are willing to use translation apps with you

Where it drops off quickly:
- small noodle shops
- older neighborhood restaurants
- taxi drivers
- small shops and market-style stalls

What works better than expecting spoken English:
- save your destinations in Chinese inside your phone
- use Alipay, DiDi, and map apps instead of relying on spoken explanation
- use menu photo translation when ordering
- keep your hotel booking page handy so you can show the address directly

The real adjustment:
Chengdu is usually navigable through screens, saved addresses, QR codes, and patience, not conversation. People often try to help even when they do not share a language with you.

If you arrive expecting fluent English, the city will feel hard. If you arrive expecting app-assisted travel, Chengdu feels much easier.
