Do I need WeChat Pay in Chengdu?
WeChat Pay is extremely popular in Chengdu, but you don't absolutely need it as a tourist.
What to expect:
- Almost all vendors accept WeChat Pay
- Many places also accept Alipay
- It's super convenient once you set it up
Do you need it as a tourist:
- If you have a Chinese bank account: Yes, definitely get it
- If you don't have a Chinese bank account: You can't easily use it anyway
- What works instead: International credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls
- Cash: Still widely used for smaller purchases
Practical advice:
- Carry some cash (500-1000 RMB) for small street vendors
- Use your credit card for bigger purchases
- At major tourist attractions, everything accepts cards
- Small family restaurants and street vendors prefer cash
So don't worry about not having WeChat Pay. You can get by perfectly fine with credit card and cash as a tourist.
