Chengdu in February: Plum Blossoms, Spring Festival 2027, and Booking Sense

February in Chengdu has two completely different moods: the Spring Festival rush and the quiet, milder second half of the month. Which one you get depends on your dates.

Plan Chengdu in February 2027 with Spring Festival dates, crowd and closure expectations, plum blossom timing, weather, and a realistic festival-week route.

The two versions of February

Before Chinese New Year, Chengdu is in preparation mode: trains are crowded, hotels fill, and the city buzzes with holiday shopping. During the holiday itself, major sights are busy and some small businesses close. After the holiday returns settle, usually in the second half of the month, the city becomes calmer and the first spring flowers start to appear. Choose which version you want before you book.

Spring Festival dates for 2027

Chinese New Year falls on February 6, 2027, with Lantern Festival on February 20. The official mainland holiday dates are usually confirmed in late 2026, so treat early calendars as provisional. The wider Spring Festival travel rush is expected from January 22 to March 2, 2027. That means the days around the festival are the worst time for spontaneous intercity travel.

What stays open and what closes

Large attractions, malls, hotels, and chain restaurants generally stay open, often with special holiday hours. Smaller neighborhood restaurants and family-run shops may close for one to three days around New Year's Eve. The Panda Base usually adjusts hours around the festival and can require advance booking. Confirm actual opening details close to your visit rather than assuming a normal schedule.

Plum blossoms and the first mild days

By the second half of February, Chengdu often starts to feel like early spring. Plum blossoms and early garden color show up around parks and temple areas, even if the air is still cool. This is a good time for People's Park, Wangjianglou, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, and slow neighborhood walks. Keep a coat for mornings and evenings and plan indoor time if rain sets in.

How I would plan a festival-week trip

If you want the holiday atmosphere, stay central, book early, and treat the festival as the main event rather than trying to squeeze in a day trip. Use the metro, expect crowds at Jinli and Kuanzhai, and reserve any important meal. If you want a calmer Chengdu, arrive after the main return peak in mid-February and enjoy the softer end of winter.
