Chengdu to Leshan Giant Buddha: Train, Cruise, Queues, and a Better Route

The Giant Buddha is one of the easiest big sights to reach from Chengdu. The hard part is deciding whether to climb down beside it or see it from the river.

Plan a Chengdu to Leshan Giant Buddha day trip with high-speed rail details, the river cruise versus stairs decision, queue advice, and a realistic itinerary.

Getting there

High-speed trains run from Chengdu to Leshan in about 40 to 60 minutes, with fares that vary by station and service. From Leshan station, a taxi to the scenic area takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes. Book an early train if you are doing this as a day trip, and allow extra time at the station. Check 12306 for current schedules because train timetables change.

Stairs or cruise: the real decision

The classic experience is the stairway down beside the giant statue, but it is steep, narrow in places, and prone to long queues. If you are uncomfortable with heights, narrow passages, or waiting in line, the river cruise is a better choice. The cruise gives you a full view of the statue from the water and normally takes around 40 minutes, with prices currently around the 70 yuan range. Confirm current ticket details on site.

A realistic day plan

Take an early train, go straight to the scenic area, and decide on the stairs based on the queue. If the line is long, switch to the cruise rather than spending your whole day waiting. After the Buddha, have lunch in Leshan and take a short walk, then return to Chengdu in the late afternoon. Trying to add Emei on the same day makes both experiences worse.

What to expect from the site

The Giant Buddha is carved into the cliff and is genuinely impressive, but the site is a busy tourist attraction rather than a quiet temple. Wear shoes with grip and bring water. In summer, the stairs can be hot and crowded; in the rainy season, they can be slippery. If you are traveling with children or older parents, the cruise is often the more sensible choice.

When to skip Leshan

Skip it if you have very little time, hate crowds, or the weather is bad enough to close the cruise. It is also not worth adding to a Chengdu trip that already has a full mountain day and a Chongqing extension. Leshan works best as a focused half-day-to-full-day outing, not as an extra stop squeezed between two other places.
