Chengdu to Chongqing: High-Speed Rail, Costs, and Whether It Is Worth It

Chongqing is close enough to fit into a Chengdu trip, but it is not a city to dash through. The rail is easy; deciding what to skip is the hard part.

A practical Chengdu to Chongqing travel guide, with high-speed rail timing, cost estimates, station choices, a two-day route, and advice on whether to visit.

The rail basics

High-speed trains connect Chengdu East or Chengdu South station with Chongqing North or Chongqing West in roughly one to one-and-a-half hours. Fares vary by train type and class, so check 12306 or a trusted booking app for your date. Book with your passport details and arrive at the station early; Chinese stations are large and security queues can be slow at peak times.

Which station to choose

Chengdu East has the most frequent services, while Chengdu South can be convenient depending on where you are staying. On the Chongqing side, Chongqing North is often more convenient for the central Yuzhong peninsula, while Chongqing West is further out. Match the station to your hotel rather than picking the first train you see.

A realistic two-day Chongqing plan

Use day one for your arrival, a walk through an old neighborhood, and one night view. Keep the evening flexible: the famous skyline viewpoints get crowded, and the city is more enjoyable when you are not queuing for a single photo. Day two can cover one market area, a river view, and a long lunch before you return. Do not try to see every viewpoint in one day; Chongqing is steep and the transfers take time.

What Chongqing does differently

Chongqing is hotter, steeper, and more vertical than Chengdu. The same distance can involve stairs, escalators, and a lot of walking. Hotpot here is a different experience, often stronger and more peppery. If you are sensitive to spice, order a mild broth and ask for less chili. Comfortable shoes matter more here than in Chengdu.

Is it worth adding to your trip?

If you have five or more days in the region and want a dramatically different city, yes. The rail is quick and the food is excellent. If you only have three days in Chengdu, adding Chongqing means cutting the city's slower moments and one good day trip. I would choose one or the other rather than doing both poorly.

Questions travelers ask about this

How long does it take to get from Chengdu to Chongqing?

About one to one-and-a-half hours by high-speed train, depending on the service and stations.

Is Chongqing worth visiting from Chengdu?

Yes if you have at least two nights to give it. The city is much steeper and more intense than Chengdu, so a rushed day trip misses the point.
